Melbourne Airport Parking Spaces Close as Naarm Way Stage 2 Begins: What It Means for Travelers

Melbourne Airport has announced the closure of up to 2,000 parking spaces to make way for the second stage of its ambitious Naarm Way road project. This development is set to significantly alter the airport’s landscape and improve access for travelers, but it also comes with some immediate challenges.

What is the Naarm Way Project?

The Naarm Way project is a multi-stage initiative aimed at enhancing the road network around Melbourne Airport. Stage two, expected to open in 2026, will create a direct connection from the Tullamarine Freeway to dedicated pick-up and drop-off areas at the carpark for Terminals 1, 2, and 3. This is designed to enhance safety and reduce traffic congestion, making the airport experience smoother for passengers.

Immediate Impacts on Parking

The closure of these parking spaces is necessary to facilitate the construction of the new road network. Melbourne Airport's Chief of Ground Transport, Property, and Retail, Jai McDermott, stated, "This project will take an estimated 70,000 cars off Terminal Drive each day and provide a more resilient road network designed to reduce stress for passengers either departing or arriving."

What Travelers Need to Know

  • Book Parking Online: With fewer parking spaces available, it’s crucial for travelers to book their parking spots online in advance to secure the best rates, especially during peak times like long weekends and holidays.

  • New Traffic Layout: Stage one of the project, which includes a $70 million elevated road connecting the Tullamarine Freeway directly to Terminal 4, has already been completed. This new link removes the need for cars to navigate roundabouts and traffic lights, simplifying access to the terminal.

  • Dedicated Drop-off Zones: The elevated road from stage one will link to levels 2 and 3 of the T123 carpark, which will be repurposed for dedicated passenger drop-off and pick-up zones. Cars will rejoin the Tullamarine Freeway from exit ramps at the carpark, while passengers will take a new footbridge to the terminals.

  • Commercial Vehicles: Once stage two is completed, the existing forecourt of the terminals will be exclusively used by commercial vehicles such as SkyBus, taxis, rideshare, and shuttle buses.

Long-Term Benefits

While the immediate inconvenience of reduced parking spaces is notable, the long-term benefits of the Naarm Way project are substantial. The new road network is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion and improve the overall airport experience for millions of travelers.

For business travelers and frequent flyers, particularly those using chauffeur services like Ausz, the improved access and reduced congestion will be a welcome change. As Melbourne Airport continues to evolve, these infrastructure upgrades are essential to maintaining its status as a key international gateway.
